Why change your AC filter?

The air filter’s job is to keep dust and debris out of your HVAC equipment. You’d be amazed how much builds up on there in a very short time. Just think about the air quality and the dust that everyday cleaning and living picks up every day. Imagine how much grime would accumulate if you didn’t clean for a month. That’s how much debris is clogging your air filter, and much more if you haven’t remembered to change the AC filter in a while.

Here’s why air conditioner filter replacement is so important. When your AC filter gets clogged, dust and dirt start getting into the air conditioner itself, causing wear and tear on the parts. You probably know what that means: the more wear and tear on the parts, the sooner they wear out and you’re dealing with a breakdown. The clogged filter also prevents enough air flow from circulating thru the system to keep it working properly. Why chance this??

How to change an AC filter

Follow these easy steps to change the AC unit filter and keep your system running smoothly.

LOCATE THE FILTER

AC air filter replacement is a quick and easy task. Before you can do it, though, you need to know where the AC filter is located.

In some systems, the filters are located in the return air duct. This is the one that pulls air from your space back into the air conditioner’s air handler system. If you have a large system with multiple air handlers and return ducts, finding the filters can be a challenge.

If both the heating and air conditioning systems share the same ducts, it’s also possible that the air filter for both systems is located in or near the blower system for the furnace. If so, it’s usually in the front of the furnace near the bottom. You may be able to see and access the filter without opening anything, or you might have to open a metal panel on the front or the top of the blower.

USE THE RIGHT REPLACEMENT FILTER

The other potentially tricky part is making sure you use the right filters. The filter size is usually printed on the side of the filter.

Also, keep in mind that you might want filters that do more than just keep dust out of your air conditioner. If you want to improve air quality in your space by removing pollen, mold and other harmful contaminants, you need to invest in HEPA filters with a MERV rating of 10 or higher.

STEPS TO REPLACE

1. TURN OFF THE POWER. This is important for two reasons. First, there’s your safety. Don’t risk touching live voltage! The second reason is the safety of your equipment. If the unit is still running while you’re removing the clogged filter, dust and debris can get sucked into the unit. It’s important that you switch off power at the unit itself, and also at the circuit breaker.

2. REMOVE THE OLD FILTER. Simply slide it out of the slot that holds it in place.

3. CHECK THE CONDITION. Once you’ve taken out the AC filter, check the condition. Does it look clogged with dirt and dust? If you hold it up to the light, you probably can’t see much light coming through. This filter needs to be replaced or cleaned, depending on the type of filter you are using. Even if it’s been in use less than the time recommended by the manufacturer, replace it anyway. Better safe than sorry.

4. CLEAN THE FILTER OR GRAB A NEW ONE. Are you using disposable filters or reusable ones? A disposable filter typically has a cardboard frame and a paper or fiber mesh surface. A permanent, reusable filter is made of a more sturdy material with a metal frame and a special coating to make it washable. If you’re cleaning a reusable one, check the manufacturer’s instructions for washing. You’ll probably just need to rinse with water and let dry completely. Or in some cases, you can just vacuum away the dust.

5. INSERT THE NEW OR CLEANED FILTER. Now you just need to put it back in the right way. An arrow on the filter’s frame shows you the direction that air should flow through the filter, which is always away from the return air duct and toward the air handler mechanism. When you insert the filter back in the housing, make sure that arrow points away from the return and toward the air handler.

Regular maintenance keeps your equipment in top working condition so the parts last longer and work more efficiently. That means the system uses less electricity, needs fewer costly repairs, and has an extended life span.

Heat pump keep freezing up?

Heat pump issues, such as the coil freezing up, can quickly hamper heating and cooling performance and place strain on other components. If ice accumulation has occurred on the outdoor coil (heating mode) or indoor coil (cooling mode), use these tips to see if you can remedy the problem before calling your trusted JC Mechanical technician.

Heating Mode
Air-source heat pumps provide heating and cooling for the home by manipulating refrigerant with pressure changes to extract, move and release heat energy. In heating mode, the refrigerant inside the indoor coil becomes exceedingly hot and transfers heat energy to indoor air. The outdoor coil, in heating mode, becomes exceedingly cold in order to absorb heat energy from very cold winter air.
However, the cold outside coil isn’t the reason for ice accumulation. These are common causes and troubleshooting tips:

Airflow – The coils must receive free airflow to instigate heat exchange by the refrigerant. Make sure the outside unit doesn’t become covered with ice, snow or any other debris. A lack of airflow across the coil will cause ice accumulation.

Refrigerant – Incorrect refrigerant charge, either too much or too little, causes ice accumulation. Call your JC Mechanical to remedy this issue.

Demand defrost – It’s possible that the demand defrost mode isn’t functioning correctly, which is another issue for a JC Mechanical professional. There may be a faulty reversing or relay switch.

Cooling Mode
In cooling mode, the heat exchange and refrigerant temperatures reverse. The indoor coil becomes exceedingly cold and absorbs heat energy from indoor air to cool it. Again, however, this isn’t why the indoor coil freezes up.

Airflow – Check the air filter. A clogged air filter blocks airflow and causes the condensate on the indoor coil to freeze. Soon, there’s a snowball effect and your house begins to heat up. Turn off the heat pump to allow the ice to melt.

Electrical contacts – Worn electrical contacts stress the compressor and other components, which can create ice accumulation.

When humidity levels are managed in the summer months, A/C systems can perform more effectively. The benefits will be added comfort and more energy efficiency. The unpleasant effects of high humidity will be reduced as well.
Humidity and Heating Systems
In the winter, low humidity becomes the primary problem in many homes as cold air is not able to hold as much moisture as warm air.
When your furnace is active for months at a time, humidity has the opposite effect than in the summer heat. A dramatic drop in moisture levels can actually make your living area feel cooler than your thermostat reading.
In fact, they can drop so much that they can make a home feel a lot cooler than it actually is.
Problems that arise in the home can include discomforts from dry skin, dry nasal passages, irritated eyes and aggravated sinuses — even damage to furniture and flooring. Your furnace or heat pump may be using a high amount of energy to run and still not provide the warmth you need in the cold.
If humidity is being managed well in your home, most people are comfortable at an indoor temperature between 71 – 77 degrees. If not, you may find yourself increasing the thermostat because the humidity is too low.

In the winter or cold climates, a lack of moisture in the air becomes an issue that can contribute to discomfort in your living spaces.
With this in mind, you will want to take an opposite approach from the warm weather by adding an appropriate amount of moisture to the air with a humidifier.
Like a dehumidifier, this appliance can be installed right on your system to help improve HVAC performance. It adds moisture to air before it is forced through the ducts in your home.
An indoor humidity level of 30 – 40% is recommended in the winter months; depending on your personal preferences, this may be even higher. The end result is a warmer, more comfortable home and a likely reduction in your energy bills.
A stand-alone humidifier can also be purchased to add humidification to the home. Depending on the size of the appliance and the size of your home, you may need multiple units in different rooms of the house or apartment in order to feel comfortable.

Heat and humidity can affect the outdoor unit or condenser in that the heavier, moist air can carry larger amounts of dirt, dust and debris, which can settle in the unit’s coils and fins. Long and irregular run times can also result in excess wear to the physical unit.
So, how can you take care of your outdoor equipment? Cleaning the outdoor unit yourself with a simple garden hose and possibly a coil cleaner can benefit the system operation in two ways.

How Does a Furnace Work?

Most people know furnaces heat their homes or businesses, but have HVAC questions about how exactly that is done. Furnaces heat your home or business by warming air and circulating it into the living or work areas indoors. Furnaces are electric, or powered by a heating fuel such as oil, natural gas, or propane.

In a gas furnace, when a heating cycle is called for by your thermostat, the system’s pilot light or ignitor will fire up the burners in the combustion chamber. The burners produce heat, that moves into the heat exchanger. Within the heat exchanger, that heat is transferred to the air cycling through the furnace. The system’s blower then moves the heated air through the duct system and into your home or business. The system keeps running like this until the temperature in the room reaches the temperature called for by your thermostat.

In an electric furnace, electricity starts the heating process rather than a pilot light or ignitor. Heating elements are used to warm the air rather than a gas burner. Air passes through the heating element’s electric resistance coils, where heat is transferred to the air supply. Then the blower circulates heat to interior areas.

How Does an Air Conditioner Work?

Many users have HVAC questions about the cooling process and how an air conditioner works. Air conditioners are made up of four essential elements: the evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion device. Indoor air is circulated through the system, passing over the evaporator coil which is located inside the home. The refrigerant inside the evaporator coil absorbs heat from the air, and transforms from liquid to vapor.

Vaporized refrigerant moves to the compressor, which is located outside. The compressor compresses the vapor, increasing temperature and pressure.

The refrigerant then moves to the condenser. The condenser condenses the refrigerant gas back into a liquid, allowing heat to radiate out. The metal fins surrounding the outdoor components, in partnership with a condenser fan motor to circulate air, allow the heat to disperse into the outdoor air quickly.

The refrigerant is moved back to the interior system in a cooled state, as a liquid. The expansion device regulates refrigerant flow going into the evaporator coil.

Once heat is extracted from the air in the evaporator coil, the blower will move the cooled air back into the interior spaces. The process is repeated until the desired temperature is reached indoors.

How Does a Heat Pump Work?

Heat pumps work differently than other types of heating and cooling equipment, creating HVAC questions about how they operate. Heat pumps offer both heating and cooling by moving heat from one area to another. Heat pumps are either air source, water source, or ground source (geothermal). To heat a home, the heat pump extracts heat from a heat source: the air outdoors (yes, there is still heat in the air even when temperatures are low), the water source (usually a pond or lake on the property), or from within the Earth (temperatures below ground remain consistent around 55 degrees year-round). This heat is moved into your home or business until desired temperatures are reached.

To cool, the heat pump extracts excess heat from indoor air. The heat is moved out of the home and deposited either into the air outdoors, the water source, or into the Earth. Heat is moved out until desired indoor temperatures are achieved.

Your home should be too! Careful planning can not only help protect your home and your belongings while you travel, but also provide your family with some energy savings to spend on souvenirs! Follow these five simple tips to prepare your home for your absence.

1. T urn off the lights .

If you decide to keep any of your lights on as a security measure, invest in an automatic timer. It can be programmed to turn on your lights during late evening and early morning hours while preventing wasted energy during the day.

2. Turn down your air conditioner.

While it’s important to keep the air circulating in your home while you’re gone, you can drastically cut down on energy usage by turning your thermostat up to 85 degrees. If you have a programmable thermostat, simply use the “vacation” feature to maintain safe and efficient indoor temperatures while you’re gone.

3. Unplug appliances and electronics.

Even when they’re turned off, anything that’s plugged into the wall can continue to consume energy. By unplugging your devices or using a smart power strip, you’ll avoid wasting standby power. Don’t forget to unplug your washer and dryer, too.

4. Adjust your water heater(s).

Turn your water heater down to “low” or to “vacation” mode. If your pool also uses a heater, consider purchasing a pool cover that will help minimize heat loss so that you can avoid the cost to reheat it.

5. Refrigerator:

If you’ll only be gone a few days, turn your refrigerator’s thermostat up a few degrees. If you’ll be gone more than two weeks, clean and empty the refrigerator, prop the door open, and unplug the unit.

Whether it’s a weekend road-trip or stay at the lake house, remember to follow some of these energy-saving tips to avoid unnecessary expenses while you’re away.
